Are you a Member of a Prestigious Organization?

This criterion is fulfilled if a professor is a member of an academic organization that only admits individuals based on significant professional achievements. Membership should be merit-based, requiring peer recognition of contributions, leadership roles, or election into the organization by fellow members. Examples include societies or associations where membership requires nominations or professional review. Simply joining an organization based on educational credentials, without merit-based evaluation, does not satisfy this criterion. The organization must have stringent entry requirements tied to scholarly impact and reputation within the field. 8 CFR § 214.2(o)(3)(iii)(B)(2)

Have you served as a Judge or Peer Reviewer?

Professors frequently serve as peer reviewers for academic journals, assessors for research grant applications, or judges at academic conferences. This role demonstrates professional recognition and expertise, as professors are trusted to evaluate the work of their peers. To satisfy this criterion, professors should document their peer-review activities, including manuscripts reviewed for high-impact journals or participation in review panels for prestigious academic bodies. The role must be more than an isolated instance—consistent participation over time in evaluating scholarly work enhances credibility. 8 CFR § 214.2(o)(3)(iii)(B)(3)

Have you worked for a reputable organization?

Professors must demonstrate that they have held an essential or critical role at a distinguished educational or research institution. This could include roles such as department chair, director of a research center, or leading major research projects with significant impact. The institution must verify that the professor’s role was integral to the organization’s success, and that their leadership or expertise was indispensable. For example, being the principal investigator on major funded research projects or leading groundbreaking academic initiatives could fulfill this criterion. Administrative or support roles, such as teaching assistant, do not qualify. 8 CFR § 214.2(o)(3)(iii)(B)(8)

Have articles been written about you?

Professors can meet this criterion if their work has been the subject of articles, profiles, or features in professional or mainstream media. This could include profiles in academic journals, interviews, or features in international or national publications. Coverage should highlight the professor’s achievements, research, or contributions to the academic community. Merely being mentioned in a larger article is not sufficient; the publication must specifically focus on the professor’s work or scholarly impact. Features in widely recognized outlets—whether academic, national news, or global media—can strengthen an application significantly. 8 CFR § 214.2(o)(3)(iii)(B)(6)

Have you received any important awards?

This criterion is met if a professor has received significant, nationally or internationally recognized awards in their field. These awards should recognize extraordinary contributions, such as innovative research, groundbreaking discoveries, or excellence in teaching. Prestigious awards from academic organizations, national science foundations, or government bodies are most relevant. Scholarships or fellowships are generally not sufficient unless they are highly competitive and based on merit rather than need. Have you made Original Scientific Contributions of Major Significance?

This criterion is particularly difficult to meet, as it requires professors to demonstrate that they have made original contributions that are significant to their academic field. To fulfill this, you’ll need substantial evidence, such as patents, peer endorsements, or proof that your work has been widely implemented or adopted. Who can sponsor me?

The petitioner, or sponsor, for an O-1 visa can be: The employer of the O-1 visa beneficiary, a U.S. agent who represents the O-1 visa beneficiary, even if the beneficiary is self-employed or has multiple employers, and a foreign employer who authorizes a U.S. agent to act on their behalf.
The O-1 visa beneficiary cannot act as their own petitioner or sponsor – the petition must be filed by either the employer or a U.S. agent.
